The Minneapolis Billiard Club hosted it's 11th annual Fall Classic 3-Cushion Billiards Tournament on September 16-18, 2016. Fred Lamers club owner and tournament organizer repeated his outstanding performance in the 2015 event by once again going undefeated to take the first place prize. Thanh Vu, one of the best players in Houston, proved why as he topped the field in the open handicapped tournament held at Goodays Billiards on Saturday August 20. I first met George Theobald in 2005 at a billiard tournament in Jackson Heights, Queens (NY). I was with a group of players, and George walked up, smiled and asked, “What’s the plural of opus?” “Opuses?” someone said. “Opi?” another offered. George smiled again, amused at the guesses, and walked away, happy that he had stumped the group. Like much of the billiards world, I learned of George’s sudden passing a few days ago. He’ll be missed by many, me included.

After the completion of the Verhoeven Open Tournament in New York, three visiting players from Vietnam - Chien Duc Anh Nguyen, Quyet Chien Tran and Nguyen Quoc Nguyen - traveled another 3,000 miles back across the country to Garden Grove, California. There they participated in another International Open tournament with players from the United States and Mexico. Continue reading for results and our re-cap of the tournament.
